![]() More recently, voice recognition has enabled the written words to progress at the pace of the unfolding speech eventually, it could entirely release speakers from the mercy of their operators. The text could now be controlled remotely, and edited up to the last minute, which significantly accelerated the pace of political speech-craft. ![]() The computerised teleprompter arrived in the 1980s, and with it, software that eliminated the need for a manual operator. It also tricks the audience’s vision: the clear design reveals the text to the speaker’s eyes but hides it from the spectators. In its transparent form, it enables speakers to shift their gaze from side to side during the speech, to convey a sense of uninterrupted contact with their listeners. The so-called ‘presidential’ teleprompter, consisting of two flat panels on either side of a stage, grew in popularity after the 1960s. This version rapidly became a favourite for newscasters, and the best way to deliver political speeches to large audiences.ĭwight D Eisenhower was the first US president to address the nation with the aid of a teleprompter, and tried it out during the 1952 presidential campaign (although he awkwardly reproached the machine during the speech for moving too slowly). Jess Oppenheimer, the producer of the TV show I Love Lucy (1951-57), filed the patent for a mirror extension that reflected the printed text on a transparent board in front of the camera, which created the conditions for the speaker to look straight into the lens. If this was Bush, you wouldn’t be trying to deflect statements of naked partisanship onto the posters here. My guess is that it has something to do with his ideology, and really nothing to do with the subject that you choose to argue That he hasn’t bothered to do so shows an understanding that his supporters and the press won’t call him on it, despite eight-plus years of documenting every single one of Bush’s malapropisms. Even Politico has pointed out this dependence, and one would think that someone as supposedly intelligent as Obama would identify a key weakness in his public persona and correct it or adapt. As I said before, this guy is the top of the Democratic food chain and our national leader, and it’s ridiculous that he ends up looking like a goofball when his TV screen goes on the fritz.īeing surprised is one thing, but Obama has shown a distinctive lack of ability to present his thoughts in any coherent form without having that security blanket in front of him, time after time after time. Especially for something so basic as making a public speech, which we all learn in high school. If Obama can’t even display the same degree of extemporaneous public speaking skill as some “breeder snowbilly,” perhaps he should be better prepared for these kinds of contingencies. Why not? Sarah Palin managed to do it during the RNC when the teleprompter took a dump. Are you also suggesting that if you were reading something from either a piece of paper or a teleprompter, and that source was taken from you without warning, that you would not skip a beat?
